Adapted from Patek Lab Independent Study Rubric:

Your mentor will evaluate and grade independent study coursework using the following criteria/components.


Research

  • Attendance:  Did you attend lab meeting, relevant research meetings, weekly check-in, and work in the lab at least one day?
  • Communication: Did you come prepared to meetings and provide written weekly updates?
  • Productivity: Were you productive on a weekly basis, based on weekly updates?


Lab meeting presentation (at least one per semester)

  • Follow the Nunn Lab guidelines for presenting your research!
  • Research question and hypotheses: Was the research question well-stated and justified?  Were hypotheses included, and clearly stated with predictions?
  • Clarity: Did the student present the research clearly and effectively?
  • Content:  Did the student include the information necessary to convey their research question and explain their data?
  • Time ManagementWas the student able to present the information in a timely manner?


Final paper

  • Follow the Nunn Lab guidelines for writing a paper!
  • Research question: Was the research question well-stated and justified?
  • Hypotheses:  Were hypotheses well-stated and do they include predictions?  Were alternative hypotheses considered?
  • Clarity: Did the student present the research clearly and effectively?
  • Content:  Did the student include the information necessary to convey their research question and explain their data?
  • Level:  Was the paper written at the level and stage appropriate to the research conducted during the semester?


Other expectations:

  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with lab members.  This means writing respectful emails, expressing needs professionally and replying promptly to phone calls/emails.  Put an away note on your email if you cannot respond within 4 hours on a workday (not weekends). 


  • Maintain a lab notebook that documents your daily work so that you can look back and remember your daily activities, decisions, and progress.


  • Expectations of us:

    • respectful interactions
    • commitment to a dialogue about future goals and attempts to have this position help you reach those goals.
    • Acknowledgement of your contribution to the research, either through an informal thank you, acknowledgement in publication form, or authorship. The level of involvement, intellectual contribution, and a variety of other factors determine the extent to which the involvement is recognized.     • A pleasant and supportive work environment.
