  • A great basic class for people who hope to do economics-related work in the future.
  • Class provides a good, broad overview of environmental/resource economics. However, the class does not provide many professional/practical skills for practitioners.

Registration Advice

  •  A big class offered in Love Auditorium... not hard to get in to.
  • Take this class early (your first year) - it provides a good overview that can apply to many other classes here at the Nicholas School.

Student Opinions

This space is intended to compile general comments from past students on the course. It will be judiciously moderated for extreme and unprofessional comments, but otherwise, it is open to a broad range of student feedback.

  • One of my favorite classes at Duke.  Not easy material for everyone, but Marty explains it better than anyone else could.  If you're looking to get the basics of environmental policy, this is the place to start.  Don't be afraid to visit Marty during office hours to get some guidance if you're lost.  And don't let the calculus scare you -- once you get the basics down (again), it won't get much harder and there's a lot you can take from this course.
  • Smith teaches this class primarily at a theoretical level. He usually presents the theory of a concept and then reinforces the theory with calculus-based analytics. While this is interesting and probably very useful for students interested in PhD work, it is not very useful for understanding how professionals use these concepts in their everyday work.
  • Try to keep up on the readings, even though it is tough during that busy Fall semester.  Start the assignments early so that you have time to ask questions if needed!
  • Smith uses games and simulations to get certain concepts across, such as sustainable harvesting and credit trading.  These were fun and helpful for understanding.  Not clear if Bennear uses similar tools.
  • Study groups are key.  Make and share outlines of readings.
  • Incredibly useful course.
