FOOD WEEK @ DUKE!
The 2nd annual Food Week is aimed at raising awareness about food issues affecting the Duke community and everyday life. The four main events will cover the meat industry, food at duke, you in dirt, and the mighty King Corn. The schedule of events follows.
All Local Food Challenge by Bon Apetit
Lunchtime @ Great Hall, Market Place and Fuqua
Bon Apetit will be serving all local food (150 mi. radius) at their facilities during lunch.
Voices from Inside the Food Industry by Duke-Durham Hunger Alliance
7 PM @ Friedl 107
A presentation from a poultry grower, an organic farmer, an industry insider, and processing plant line worker.
Duke Campus Farm "Barn Raising"
10 AM - 2 PM on location
DCF will be hosting a massive workday to help the farm build its first hoop house (a type of greenhouse). Lots of hands on work accompanied by good times and great people!
"King Corn" with filmmaker Ian Cheney by Farmhand
7 PM @ LSRC B101 "Love Auditorium"
Ian Cheney is a talented documentary filmmaker and advocate of sustainable food systems. Ian is one of the Co-founders of Food Corps, and founder of the documentary advocacy group "Wicked Delicate." His movie "King Corn," a documentary about "two friends, one acre of corn, and a subsidized crop that drives a large part of our nation's food system," recently won a Peabody Award. Please come join us for this exciting and informative event.
Before the event, a reception will be hosted in the Hall of Science in front of Love Auditorium at 6:15pm. Local food snacks and beer will be provided. After the film, Ian will give a brief talk about his film and open the floor to Q & A. We look forward to seeing you there!
Desert Expo by Duke Culinary Society

Duke University Culinary Society is proud to present its annual Dessert Expo that will be taking place in just a few short weeks! Immediately prior to the Future of Food at Duke event and discussion, our Expo will provide all Du...ke foodies with casual conversations and tasty snacking
Everyone is encouraged to enter, with groups of up to 5 people, and enough of their dessert to feed 30. Desserts should be original recipes and have one or more sustainable factors (e.g. local fruits and other ingredients, free-range eggs, etc.). Future of Food at Duke
8:45 PM @ Great Hall
Food week ends with a round table discussion about the future of Food at Duke. Sue Wasiolek, Dean of Students, Larry Moneta, VP for Student Affairs, Rick Johnson, Assistant VP of Student Affairs for Housing, Dining, and Residence Life, Nate Peterson, Bon Appétit Resident District Manager, Pete Schork, DSG President, and Esosa Osa, VP of Residence Life and Dining, will be present to answer students' questions and provide information about Duke's plans for dining on campus. Topics might include environmentally sustainable food at Duke's eateries, the West Union renovations, new dining options on campus, and the meal plan.
