PUBPOL 222S - Magazine Journalism
Course Stats
Instructor(s): Robert J. Bliwise, Editor of Duke Magazine |
Units: 3 |
Semester Offered: Spring |
Description
Please refer to the official Duke course description here.
This is a detailed introduction into the world of magazine journalism, focused mainly on writing craft, but also covering the business and artistic side of it. The course is taught by Bob Bliwise, the founding editor of Duke Magazine.
Skills and Career Applications
Students also get a good survey of the magazine market, and how different titles cater to different audiences. You'll learn how to interview people for stories, and write long-form journalism, record podcasts, and write short sidebars.
Registration Advice
- Students usually need to email the instructor to get a permission number to register.
- This is a hugely time-intensive class, requiring lots of writing and field experiences (interviews, etc.). Make sure you have enough time to handle this load.
Student Opinions
For Nicholas students who are used to the world of technical writing, this will be fairly intense intro into a different style of writing.
