Latin 1:  Introduction to Latin (Fall 2009)

Overview:

In this course (and its sister course in the spring), we shall focus on acquiring a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the Latin language (grammar, vocabulary, and syntax).  Our goal is to have you reading the Latin of Cicero, Caesar, Catullus, Vergil and many others, or what is better known as Classical Latin, by the end of the academic year (with the assistance of a dictionary and a good grammar).

Grading:

¿    Class attendance, preparedness (including homework), participation: 15%
¿    Weekly quizzes: 20% [LOWEST QUIZ GRADE WILL BE DROPPED]
¿    Exam 1: 20%
¿    Exam 2: 20%
¿    Final Exam: 25%

Grading Scale:

¿    97-100% = A+
¿    94-6  = A
¿    90-93 = A-
¿    87-89 = B+
¿    84-6 = B
¿    80-3 = B-
¿    77-9 = C+
¿    74-6 = C
¿    70-3 = C-
¿    67-9= D+
¿    64-6 = D
¿    60-3 = D-
¿    below 60 = F

 
Policies:

¿    Attendance in class is mandatory.  Come to class prepared, on-time, and ready to participate.  Please contact me ahead of time via email if you expect to miss class due to illness, religious observance, and/or university-endorsed extracurricular activities (give me as much notice as possible).
¿    Homework will be randomly collected throughout the semester (on average once per week); having homework completed and on time will make up part of your participation grade.   You must be present to hand in your homework, unless we have arranged an alternative ahead of time.  Homework will not be accepted from another person in the class.
¿    No make-up quizzes or exams, nor will late homework be accepted unless you have made arrangements with me ahead of time.

Instructions for all Homework:

¿    Specific homework assignments will be posted on Blackboard.   
¿    Homework is due on the day, and in the class session, for which it is assigned.
¿    You must WRITE OUT all translations of Practice and Review, Sententiae Antiquae, and Wheelock paragraph translations as well as any paradigms, translations, etc., assigned.
¿    When assigned a chapter to read, be sure to read through the entire chapter, including the Latina est Gaudium---Et Utilis sections.
¿    You will be required to know vocabulary for quizzes and exams, so be sure to memorize vocabulary as you move along.  Note-cards are often very useful for this.  You can make your own or there are several companies that make Latin vocabulary cards.

Dictionaries:

If you are interested in continuing Latin beyond the first year, a good dictionary will be essential.  Even if not continuing Latin beyond the beginning levels, you might find a Latin dictionary useful as a supplement to the brief vocabulary lists offered in the back of your Wheelock's text:

Elementary Latin Dictionary.  Charlton T. Lewis.  1969.  Oxford:  Oxford
University Press (probably the best dictionary, albeit somewhat expensive, for beginners and experts alike who need a manageable but comprehensive Latin dictionary).
Cassel's Latin Dictionary.  D. P. Simpson.  1968.  Macmillan Publishing
Company:  New York: (a useful and affordable, albeit basic, dictionary especially suited for those beginning Latin).
Oxford Latin Dictionary.  P. G. W. Glare.  1983.  Oxford:  Oxford University
Press. (the pre-eminent Latin dictionary, this book is very expensive and not very portable, but useful for anyone seriously pursuing Latin as a course of study---for beginners, I recommend using the copy of this dictionary at Perkins or in the Department of Classical Studies library).

Grammars:

Wheelock's provides a clear and concise introduction to Latin grammar and will certainly fulfill the needs of this course.  More comprehensive, and dense, grammars exist for those of you interested in pursuing Latin at a higher level. The one I like best is also available very cheaply (about $20):

A Latin Grammar.  William Gardner Hale, Carl Darling Buck. 1966. University of Alabama Press.  ISBN 0817303502.  Originally published in 1903.
