Map/delineate watershed, determine watershed area & characterize watershed:
-Use GIS or other software
-current land use: % impervious surface, lawns, forested areas, etc.
-get a picture of historical land use (i.e. farming, timber production, etc.)

Assess stream morphology:
-determine channel dimensions, profile, pattern, bankfull stage, bedform characteristics, width-to-depth ratios, etc.

Classify stream type using Rosgen classification system:

Assess stream hydrology:
-determine base flow rates, peak flows during storms, water velocity
-determine stream type: intermittent, ephemeral or perennial

Assess stream & riparian habitat:
-Vegetation survey of in-stream, riparian & surrounding habitat
-Inventory of existing aquatic & riparian animal species
-Determine/characterize existing habitat spaces: habitat types in stream (i.e. shallow pools), extent of riparian/wetland area (if there is one), floodplain

Assess water chemistry & quality:
-Nutrient loading (nitrogen & phosphorous) at base flow & peak flows
-Presence of other contaminants

Substrate (soil) analysis: both in-stream and riparian area / floodplain
Choose a reference reach, or portfolio of reference streams, that represents a stable stream in a similar watershed (i.e. similar area, land use, topology) that we can work toward

Assess overall stream stability & determine causes of stream degradation:
-Is our stream degrading & becoming further incised?
-Is our stream approaching an equilibrium?
-If our stream is changing and unstable, what is causing this? Land use changes (& changed hydrology & storm flows), increased/decreased sediment in runoff?

Determine our targets/goals for restored stream section:
-Ecology of restored stream: vegetation & animal life present, habitat types, native species
-Channel pattern, dimensions, characteristics of bedform (i.e. diversity of pools, sections of running water, etc.)
-New hydrology: i.e. potential for flooding into created wetland areas
-Water quality (flowing from our restored section)
-What are our design options & what is feasible given our timeframe and costs? Create a new channel? New wetland areas in floodplain?
